Lowe House, Tubac, Arizona

I am in my second week in the artist in residence program at the Lowe House Project in Tubac, AZ. This is my outside studio. I have primarily been doing plein air painting. These views are within walking distance. How can you not be inspired?

The morning and evening light is beautiful. So, I am out early or later. I have to work quickly to get color notes all over the composition. Then I walk back to my studio and finish from memory and my sketch with notes. This is my inside studio at the Lowe House.

Here are pictures of the inside of the Lowe House. These are the common areas to be shared. However, my artist friend Judy Goral and I are the only ones here at this time.

This is my private space.

On November 12th there will be a historical tour of six houses in Tubac. The Lowe House is central to that tour. There will be an exhibit of my artwork and of other artist, past and present. My work from this two week project will be displayed in the foyer.  Wish me luck. This is the foyer that will easily hold twelve of my paintings.

Peace,

Sue and Suzy

Sue Flanagan, Artist in Residence in the Lowe House Project, Tubac, AZ

This artist is in heaven! Painting is all I am doing for 2 1/2 weeks.  Well, you have to have some breaks. So, there was the Dias de Los Muertos celebration, shops, wonderful restaurants, the cultural center, delicious ethnic food, and the occasional awesome margarita.

My artist friend, Judy Goral, and I are staying at the the Lowe House in Tubac, AZ. I have a nice suite in the Lowe House which dates back to 1752. It is in the center of the historic old town of Tubac which is a small town of ~900 people. This is the entrance to my suite. I have an adjacent studio with a  huge window looking out to the yard and mountains beyond.

I am painting the cultural and historic sites in the area. On the first day, I had to walk down two houses for the Gomez house. The morning light is beautiful so I have been getting up before sunrise.

On other days, I had only to walk out different doors for my subjects.  This is the Pennington house and St. Ann's church.

We spent a morning at the Presidio and I painted the Rojas house.

Last night Judy and I drove a few blocks to a hilltop to see the most beautiful sunset I have ever seen. That was truly speed painting and the photo doesn't do it justice.

I have found it so convenient to have a studio so close to my plein air painting spots. The light changes so quickly. I have to get color notes all over the painting and then go to the studio to finish from memory, my sketch with notes and occasionally, a photograph.

It has been a great time with incredible weather and interesting people. Nancy Valentine runs the Lowe House and is on the board of the Historical Society. Both organizations are very involved in preserving the rich historical and cultural life of this community. The time is going by quickly. I have another week and a half ending with a show of my work.

I have to tweak the paintings I have done so I will post those later.

Until then,

Sue and Suzy
