Opening Pine Tree Studio in Holland, Michigan

Pine Tree Studio 6596 146th Ave. Holland, Michigan

Call it luck or coincidence or a mistake. I call it God's providence. I was hoping to get a seasonal studio space because our summer park home in Saugatuck is far too small for my painting process and creative endeavors.
On our evening walk, my husband and I stopped to talk to one of our neighbors. We were mistaken and thought it was another couple. They started to say how they sold their house and just closed their studio of 16 years. My ears perked up and I asked for the landlord's contact information. They obliged and we went on our way still not sure who they were.
I contacted the landlord and had a look. Since it had been a photographer's studio, it had a lot of positive aspects.

It is a large space. There are a lot of shelves, wall space for hanging art, many tables to work on, a bathroom, utility sink, and descent lighting.

It is a pole barn in the country. It has beautiful surroundings but yuk, no internet and poor reception on my phone. It is seasonal in that the water is turned off in the winter and boarded up. That's OK because we are in the area on a seasonal basis. The verdict is still out on temperature control because there is no heat and the air conditioning may be inadequate.
Everything considered, I had to take a chance. I would forever regret it if I didn't try. Everyone who comes to see it can see the potential.
I want it to be an experiential place where I can build an artistic community and encourage people in their God given creativity. I am offering workshops and classes.
Stay tuned for things as they develop. Visit my website at www.sueflanagan.com and Facebook.com/pinetreeartgallery
Here are some things to consider if you are considering opening a studio. Be clear about your purpose and your needs. Make sure you communicate clearly with the landlord. Know your responsibilities and their responsibilities. Get another person's opinion, hopefully an objective one. Make sure the positives clearly outweigh the negatives. Be prepared financially. There are start up costs. Inspect the place carefully before you sign the lease and take the key.
Enjoy!
